Ten luxury chalets in the foothills of the Magaliesberg — taken over, exclusively, by the cohort that is in residence. Bushveld mountain views, outdoor fire, open skies, and the wellness centre, infinity pool and fine-dining kitchen of a working luxury lodge.
We looked at a long list of South African lodges before we chose one. We wanted privacy without isolation. Luxury without spectacle. A wellness centre that already worked. A kitchen that could hold a clinical brief and still make dinner feel like dinner. La Joya is that lodge.
Set in the bushveld foothills of the Magaliesberg, La Joya Conference Lodge & Wellness Centre is a forty-five-minute drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, moments from Hartbeespoort Dam. Bushveld mountain views, outdoor fire areas, natural light throughout the day, and genuine distance from the participants' everyday environments — the setting is not a backdrop, it is an active ingredient.
La Joya is a fully working lodge — and that matters. Each space already exists, already works, and is operated by a team that has been doing this for years. We assign each one to a programme job and run the week through them.
Participant accommodation, set up before arrival to each guest's personalised configuration. Private, secluded, and entirely the cohort's during a retreat.
The home of every morning group session and every evening masterclass — the formal clinical content of the week.
Evening social time and the wind-down transition. The fire is part of the protocol — warm light, quiet conversation, no screens.
Reserved for the cohort — particularly the owls, between fire time and their later wind-down. Reading, quiet work, decompression.
State-of-the-art wellness centre with gym, sauna, jacuzzi, and indoor and outdoor pools. Available across the daily free-time slots.
Communal lunch and dinner in La Joya's fine-dining restaurant. Breakfast is personalised — flexible from 6:00am, ordered via tablet, eaten when your biology says so.
Daytime on the retreat has a deliberate structure — peak cognitive window for work or creative thinking, dead zone for spa and relaxation, late afternoon for owl exercise. The activity menu is built around that.
Spa treatments — massage, facial, body scrub — gym, sauna, jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor pools.
Swimming, reading in the garden or private lounge, painting (with an optional instructor), games.
Zipline on the property — for the cohort that wants it.
Lion & Safari Park game drive, the Monkey Sanctuary, Magaliesberg hiking and mountain bike trails, Hartbeespoort Dam, the Aerial Cableway.
A conference room is available for calls. The retreat does not insist on disconnection — it insists on getting the sleep work done while you're here.
Painting instructor, breath work or yoga facilitator, available by advance arrangement depending on the cohort.
A forty-five-minute drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria — close enough that you can clear your diary, leave after lunch, and arrive in time for the welcome dinner. Far enough that nobody can drop in for a quick chat.
